A Christian pilgrimage from
Srilanka to Richmond
by Emily Thevathasan
I was born in Srilanka, raised in a Christian
family with my dad, mom, 2 brothers and 3 sisters. I was number 5 in birth
order.
Srilanka is a Buddhist country but my parents were Christians and
were very much involved in the church we belonged to. I grew up in a loving
caring Christian home, went to Sunday school, church and taking part in all
the church activities.
|
As God had plans for my life, I got married to
Christopher Thevathasan and moved from Srilanka to England as my
husband, Christopher, was studying at Luton in England. When I was
in England I went to church where Chris and his family went. God
blessed us and in 2 years we had our first son, Darren. Shortly
after, we moved to the USA.

I grew up in a loving
caring Christian home... |

First Baptist
Church, Richmond VA became our home church in 1982. Our second son, Darius,
was born here in Richmond in 1989.
First Baptist
Church was loving and caring for my family. Our sons got involved in many
activities church had for kids and they grew up strong in faith, knowing a
loving and understanding God in their life.
Christopher and I joined the church choir and Sunday school and I
work with the children's choir.
Being in
adult Sunday school we learned more about the
Bible and understanding God's love.
|
Adult Sunday school was something new to us as where we came from,
we went to Sunday school only as kids. Being in adult Sunday school
we learned more about the Bible and understanding God’s love. As our
kids moved to the youth activities I got involved with the youth
committee and I am still helping out there today.
I have been employed with the International Mission Board since
1992. God placed me at IMB among Christian believers to serve the
Lord for His kingdom.

God has been so great to me and my family and He has blessed us in
so many ways. Even though we have many ups and downs, I thank Him every day
of my life. God is good. He is good all the time.
