Church at Brandermill Woods

Ray and Mollie Hummel’s friendship with the Brandermill Woods
Retirement Community began over 15 years ago when Mollie’s mother
and father decided to move from Williamsburg to Richmond to be
closer to their only child. Living only 15 minutes away, Mollie, Ray and their two children visited often with her parents, and they grew to love the community at Brandermill Woods.

During this time, both Mollie and Ray were involved in community outreach. Mollie began working with children with various learning disabilities, showing particular patience with those children diagnosed with autism. Ray’s musical abilities were at the center of his community involvement, and he began playing clarinet in several bands. He continues to be passionate about his participation in a band that plays for free so that the money donated can go to help provide free treatment to children with medical problems.
After the death of Mollie’s parents, the Hummels’ daughter, Carolyn, suggested to Mollie and Ray that they find a place to serve together. Mollie automatically thought of the community at Brandermill Woods and met with the activities director to discuss possible ways they could give back to the community that had meant so much to their family. With God working through their desire to give of their time and talents, the idea for a Bible study began to grow. By May 2009 the study was underway on the 2nd Sunday of each month. Ray uses his musical gift to lead the group in singing hymns, and Mollie provides the Bible study. Currently, the study is taking the group through the Old Testament with Molly focusing on such heroes as David and Daniel. Mollie loves it when the material she is presenting resonates with one of the folks attending and they call out, “I know that story!” |

Mollie’s passion for reaching out to the Brandermill Woods community
has extended to Friday nights when she arrives after her job at the Virginia Eye Institute in time to have dinner with her “Golden Girls.” The group
enjoys time with each other, and Mollie helps spread the news about the Sunday services.

The Hummels also have a heart to reach out to those who live in the Health Care section and are most often without any regular visitors. But for now Mollie and Ray are providing “church,” as one of the folks explained it, for those in the Assisted Living section of Brandermill Woods.
