Igor Conka is the pastor of the Baptist church in
Ruzomberok. Igor says, “It isn’t easy being Baptist in Slovakia”. Pastor
Igor has been at the Ruzomberok Baptist church just since July, 2006. He
hopes to help his members grow in Spirit and as well help the town of
Ruzomberek grow better acquainted with Baptists.
There are about 30,000 people residing in this small but
popular winter ski resort and if they reflect Slovakia’s national
statistics, about 70% are Catholic.
The small Baptist church of about 50 members has been
reaching out to the community through coordination of Summer English
camps sponsored Richmond's First Baptist Church. As such this vibrant
church has become recognized by Ruzomberok’s Office of the Mayor for
it’s contributions to the betterment of the community through such
educational camps for the children and adults of the town. And even the
local radio and newspaper media is starting to drop by to spread the
word about this growing presence of Christ in the heart of Slovakia.
Members of First Baptist Church have been travelling to
Ruzomberok 1999. More than 100 Richmonders have participated in the
mission partnership in these last seven years. In 2006, First Baptist
members helped in Slovakia with English camp, handbells, puppets, and a
basketball camp.
