Innovative Mission Possibilities
A menu of possible mission innovations for those who want to serve in something different
Looking For A Different Way To Serve?
First Baptist provides numerous opportunities for people to live out their faith
in God through service to others. However, there are those adventurous spirits
who want to serve in ways that are fresh and innovative, in a way that is
“not status quo”. Does that sound like you? If so, we might just have a place
for you. The following ideas are mission opportunities just waiting for the
right volunteers. They are ministries still on the drawing board, so to speak. Some
are designed to be ongoing programs or ministries and some are just different
ways to become involved in missions. They all require varied time, interest, and skill
levels. If you see something that peaks your interest, give me a call and let’s
see how we might implement it into our overall missions program. Or, if
you have a particular gift or skill you want to use for missions, I am sure we can find
a place for you to serve. I look forward to talking with you!
User Your Foreign Language Do you speak a foreign language fluently? If so, you could teach classes here at FBC, help interpret for international ministry, or maybe even participate in special worship services.
Disaster Relief Hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes, floods; these natural disasters leave thousands of people devastated in their wakes. Our disaster relief team would be ready to respond with our presence, as well as, the presence of God.
StreetWorks Did you know that 73% of homeless people work? However, many cannot find or retain employment for very long. StreetWorks is an idea that partners the community of homeless with the larger community in doing clean-up, revitalization, etc… It would provide public service and employment opportunity, as well as, hopefully dispel or alter many existing myths and fears regarding the homeless.
Ministry to Internationals The international community of Richmond is growing daily. Many of these individuals desire to “fit in” with their community, however, lack the language, cultural, and other basic skills to do so. M.T.I. (Ministry to Internationals) would help families and individuals integrate into their surroundings more easily, while at the same time, extending a hand of friendship and acceptance.
Society of St. Andrew Help eliminate food waste while fighting hunger. Experience first-hand the biblical practice of gleaning. Contact Society of St. Andrew at 1-800-333-4597.
Offer Training According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly one in three U.S. workers had jobs that pay at or below the federal poverty level. And moving out of poverty is no easy task. However, training people to become entrepreneurs can help them utilize their God-given gifts and talents to better themselves, their community, and the future of their families.
Teach English Teach English in China for one month with the Amity Summer English Program. This program is two prong, one part for college students and one part designed for adults.
Start a Bible Study Start a Bible study for people in nursing and/or adult homes. Generally, people in these facilities get left out of the faith community, so, bring the faith community to them. Reach out and minister with the love of Christ.
Use Technology There are many churches (including us!) and groups who need help using technology in some way to further God's kingdom. Areas include creating websites, managing networks, recording sermons, or distributing brochures.
A Good Deed, Indeed Sometimes the hardest things take the least effort. Stretch your comfort zone and offer to help your neighbor with a project, assist a stranger with a package, say "God bless you" to the cashier, or just open the door for others. You'll be surprised at how these acts of kindness can brighten everyone's day!
Follow Your Heart These are just a few ideas on how to get involved, there are many, many more. Pray about how you can use your skills, hobbies, or interests to help those you feel compassionate about.
Make an Impact
Serving God is not really an option once you give your life completely to God. Serving your community is part of being a good citizen. Serving others is a sure fire remedy for improving whatever ails you. Notice a pattern here? Serving is good for you in a variety of ways. When we choose to serve others, it makes an impact not only on the life of the one we serve, but on our life as well. May God bless and guide you as you find your place to serve.
