Being A Good Great Team Member

Let’s All Try To Get Along

When we accept the call to participate on a mission team, we not only accept the mission part, but also the team aspect. Being part of a team may seem like the least difficult part of going on a mission trip, however, it many times proves to be the toughest challenge we face. Different personalities, close quarters, and strenuous schedules can be a hazardous combination if unprepared.

Keep In Mind

You are not alone on this trip. To have a successful experience, you must learn the first two rules of mission team participation. One, learn to adapt. Your normal daily routine will most likely be upset. Even though American influence has infiltrated almost every part of the world, each culture has its own way of doing, saying, and experiencing things. Quickly adapting your self to their way of life will enable everything to go more smoothly. Second, learn to compromise. Though tough to remember sometimes, our way is not always the best way. Other people have needs, wants, desires, pet peeves, and irritations just like we do. We must learn to consider others and their situations and circumstances.

A Few Reminders

  • Try to encourage those who are homesick or discouraged.
  • Listen to others, don’t do all the talking.
  • Learn to make personal decisions while keeping in mind how it will affect the team.
  • Be aware of how you are feeling and why. Determine what you need and be careful not to take frustrations out on other team members.
  • Leave your competitiveness at home. You are an equal on a team.
  • Learn to respect others needs for privacy, quiet time, silence, and space.
  • If possible, have a team meeting every evening to debrief about the days activities. Talk about what happened, how you feel, and concerns and problems with the team.
  • If you have a personal problem with another team member, go to them and try to work it out.
  • Make yourself open and available for others to talk to.
  • Go with the schedule you are given if at all possible.
  • Appreciate your blessings and do not complain.
  • Pray for patience, love, and strength to do the task before you and to be with the people around you.
