Staying Safe On The Mission Field
Better to be safe than sorry...
It is not difficult to be careful when you travel. The key to being safe
overseas is much the same as it is here in the United States. However, most of
us live in nice, safe neighborhoods so we forget how to be cautious sometimes.
Many people think it is “unsafe” to travel or be abroad but the fact is, you
have a better chance of being a victim near or in your own home than anywhere
else. All that being said, there are still a few safety tips it wouldn’t hurt to
bear in mind when traveling abroad. Some of these may be simple reminders but by
practicing them you can help assure yourself a safe and happy mission trip.
Rule Number …
- Be observant. Notice things and people. This practice will also help you
enjoy the trip as well as keep you safe.
- Always carry identification.
- Especially when you are in a politically sensitive country or area, be
careful what you write in journals, say to others in public or on the phone.
- Put all your belongings away and out of sight when you leave the place
where you are staying, especially when in a hotel or guest house.
- Hold on to your bags, purses, and other luggage.
- Men, keep your billfold in your front pocket or put a rubber band around
it.
- Never allow someone to carry your bag that has your passport, tickets, or
other valuables in it.
- Anytime you leave the group, tell someone where you going.
- Do not go out alone.
- Do not anyone “assist” you with an ATM transaction.
- If you have something stolen, report it immediately to the police. Keep a
copy of the police report for your insurance, and report lost items to proper
places. (ex. call credit card companies, passport agencies, etc..).
- Take only taxis clearly identified with official markings.
- Avoid public disturbances.
- Avoid “seedy” areas.
- Do not discuss travel plans or other personal matters with strangers.
- Beware of strangers approaching you offering “deals” or to be your tour
guide.
- Act like you know what you are doing and where you are, even if you are
not.
- Know the address of where you are staying.
- Keep a low profile.
