Being A Respectful Traveler (And Having A Good Time As Well)
Different Place, Different Culture
The world is made up of many cultures and beliefs... and many of those we may
not agree with nor understand. However, to do missions effectively, one must
respect the culture and belief system of the place where missions are being
done. In addition, there are some basic practices a person, especially a
Christian, should exercise that show respect for the people and place you are
ministering.
A Few Helpful Hints
- While on the plane, go easy on the cologne or perfume.
- Learn about the people and place where you are ministering. Learn some of
the language, history, culture, and beliefs before you go.
- Do not be loud, boisterous, and overly outgoing.
- When photographing people, establish rapport first, then ask permission to
take their picture.
- Do not take pictures of accidents, public disturbances, religious services,
military installations, government buildings, or sacred areas or events where
photos are not allowed.
- Be sensitive to certain situations when taking photographs. Take into
consideration peoples emotions and feelings before taking snapshots.
- Conserve water and electricity.
- Avoid stereotypes.
- Ask questions about the culture.
- Develop a spirit of humility and a genuine desire to learn about others.
- Never make promises you cannot keep.
- Accept the schedule you are given while you are there unless you cannot
physically bear it, then be polite about requesting a change.
- Do the assigned task the best you can and allow others to do their work in
their own way.
- Respect the way your host do things and do not try to override their wishes.
- Take time to communicate with people in the host country. Learn to listen, not
just hear and see.
- Do not compare the host country or any of its ways to the U.S.
- Never make fun or speak negatively of people, traditions, beliefs, etc…
Different does not mean inferior.
- Avoid telling ethnic or course jokes.
- Many mannerisms we use here in the U.S. may be offensive when used in other
countries. Learn before you go!
- Do not pry too deeply into others lives or ask questions that are too
personal.
- Avoid complaining.
- Culture refers to the total way of life of particular groups of people. It
involves ideas, customs, social structures, language arts, and norms of a given
people. The more you learn about those you minister to, the better your witness
will be received.
