Thinking About A Mission Trip? A Step by Step Guide To Decide
We Are All Missionaries
We are all called to be missionaries. Each and every one of us has been
assigned the task of carrying God’s love and Word to all the earth. However, let
me explain before you either feel guilty or run off to a remote village in outer
Mongolia to serve.
As Christians, we have all pledged to lift up the name of Christ and to
proclaim to everyone God’s love. We are to do this in everyday life in every
aspect of our life, hence, we are all “missionaries.”
However, most people identify the term “missionary” as one who goes out or
away to serve God. For the sake of space and time, let’s work with that
definition. Do you feel God calling you to serve (to go out or away) on a
mission experience this year? If so, here are the necessary steps to take to
insure your mission experience will go as smoothly as possible. God bless you as
you decide.
Here You Go!!!!
- If you feel called to go on a mission trip, decide which trip you would
like to take. Check the
opportunities list often for the latest information on upcoming trips or,
consult the Mission Control bulletin board at the Mulberry Street entrance (near the Adams Room) for
available trips.
- Pray. Ask God if this is the trip for you.
- If it is, contact the Missions Office,
Room 125, to obtain all the necessary forms
and applications. Since most trips consist of small groups, the slots fill fast
so do not delay.
- All forms must be completed and turned in to the Missions office no later
than April 15. You also must turn in a non-refundable $100 deposit
to assure your slot on the team. Remember, teams are filled on a first
come-first serve basis, even if they are filled before the registration
deadline. You may apply for financial assistance from the church to help defray
the cost of the trip if this assistance is needed. These request forms should be
turned in as early as possible to assure that funds are still available.
- Financial assistance decisions will be made as soon as possible , however,
you should plan on having at least half of the total trip cost paid three months
prior to departure date.
- Once teams have been determined, orientation sessions will be set-up to
assist the team with answering general questions about travel, developing
language and culture skills, coordinate event and ministry planning, and
personal/spiritual team building.
- Before your departure, seek out as much information about the place you
are going on your own. Learn as much of the language and culture as
possible. Prepare yourself spiritually. Have a great time serving God!
What Else Do I Need To Know?
You may have several questions regarding your decision to go on a mission
tip. I encourage you to check out the other brochures in the World-Wind
series (located on the bulletin board at the Mulberry Street entrance). They may
answer several of your questions.
Also, ask yourself if you are spiritually, physically, and emotionally ready
for a mission trip. Remember, you are going to be part of a team. If you have
questions about your abilities, readiness, etc….contact me in the
missions office.
Going on a mission trip can be an exciting way to serve God, meet new people,
see new places, and experience new things. However, the main reason we do
reasons is to glorify God through service to others.
There are web sites, both government, religious, and private that may help
you to decide. A mission trip can be life changing… know all you can know before
you go.
May God bless and guide you!
