PLEASE EXPLAIN…
Community Missions

Many of us have heard the term missions explained in many ways. The various definitions usually involve similar characteristics such as travel, foreign speech, jet lag, and strange food. In some cases, these characteristics are a part of missions, but not always. Here at First Baptist, you will hear the term Community Missions spoken of hopefully quite often. What does that term mean exactly and what ministries are included under that umbrella terminology?

If you are looking for some secret, hidden meaning in the term, I am sorry to disappoint you. Community Missions is simply a term we use to describe the various outreach ministries our church offers to the less fortunate of our, well… community.

A tougher term to define might be community. Though many of our ministries do only serve particular zip codes, still others reach out to anyone who wishes to participate. Ministries such as our food pantry, Fan Club, household closet, and clothes closet are set up to serve individuals and families living within a certain geographical area. We provide other service alternatives to those living outside this specified area. However, ministries like Grace Fellowship, Mobile Ministry, shower ministry, and certain financial programs, are open to all people in the Greater Richmond community. Our Neighbors at Hand program is predominantly geared toward church members and/or their friends and relatives.

Now I know that you may not know what all the above ministries do but one thing you can count on is that they are all done in the name of Jesus Christ and for the glory of God. That is what sets us apart from other agencies and programs that may offer the same services. Through these ministries we strive to enrich the lives that we come into contact with by giving them physical and spiritual hope. These ministries are also a way for our members to live out their faith in Christ through service to others.

So, this is what we mean when we say community missions at First Baptist. Of course, there is much more to it all than just programs, it is about people, those that serve and those that are served.
