First Baptist Church Preschool
Special Thursday morning video series for adults
Oprah Winfrey's Belief video series February 11 - March 24. Join facilitator Jeannie Dortch on Thursday mornings from 10:30 - 12:00 in Suite 220 to view and discuss this transformative television series produced by Oprah Winfrey. Filmed where cameras have rarely been, it explores humankind’s ongoing search to identify with something greater than ourselves. Belief searches the origins of diverse faiths and what connects all our stories. Walking in another’s shoes changes perspectives. Belief is a start on the road to understanding religious practices of people around the world. Contact Alex Hamp, 358-5458 ext.155, or Jeannie Dortch, 804-227-3229, to register for this free series. See flyer for more details.
Our preschool is proud to celebrate 69 years of continuing education! We provide a warm and caring Christian atmosphere to nourish children's personal and spiritual growth. Through association with dedicated Christian teachers, and with age-appropriate activities, each child is encouraged to grow in love and appreciation for God, his creation, and his Son, Jesus. Special efforts are made to involve parents in the spiritual and personal growth process of their children.
Our curriculum has been developed by our faculty and is based on developmentally appropriate activities and practices as well as the State of Virginia’s “Foundation Blocks for Early Learning.”
Our Motto: "It's OK to have too much fun!"

Please note: We are a peanut-free school.
We believe children need a learning environment which will: nurture each preschooler as a unique and valuable child of a caring God, encourage the total development of each child physically, socially, spiritually, emotionally, and intellectually encourage a strong feeling of self-confidence and respect for others provide first-hand opportunities for the child to grow by inquiring, by exploring, by creating, by asking, by seeking and by finding.
We encourage the total development of each child (spiritual, social, emotional, physical and intellectual), so we plan a variety of activities each day to meet individual needs. We have learning centers which include blocks, art, home living, manipulatives, math, science, and books. The learning centers help to develop many skills, such as language & literacy skills, social skills, cognitive problem solving skills, and large and fine motor skills. During the free choice of activities, teachers and assistant teachers offer guidance, motivation, and encouragement to children on a one-to-one basis or in small groups.
Our three-, four-, and five-year olds attend Chapel every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Sanctuary. Each Chapel service includes a Bible story, music and prayer.
Music & Movement Class
Our three-, four-, and five-year olds attend Music and Movement Class every Monday with our music teacher, Ms. Ruth. They are introduced to music concepts and instruments.
The three-, four-, and five-year old classes enjoy going to the Children's Library once a week.
Gross Motor Development
At First Baptist we have two playgrounds; one for the younger classes and one for the older classes. We also have a full-size indoor Gym for additional motor skill development and perfect for rainy days!
Throughout the school year our Pre-K children (four- and five-year olds) visit places such as the Pumpkin Patch, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Teddy Bear Clinic at St. Mary's Hospital, Maymont Park, and The Ronald McDonald House.
Throughout the school year, we offer classes after school that include: Little Kicks, CORE, Little Scholars, The Fun Bus, and Village Dance Studio.
"Mom, I wish I had a time machine so I could go back to when I was at First Baptist. I could play with all my old friends on the playground and play in the Gym."
- Former Student, Age 6.5
"I'll say it FOREVER: First Baptist Preschool is THE most amazing preschool in the city. An urban location with seasoned and loving teachers who consistently help children find their VOICE in the world through art, music and play. You will not find a better program that embraces the WHOLE needs of a child. You just won't. First Baptist Preschool: where it's OK to have too much fun!"
- Melissa Ansley Brooks, Parent
"I always looked forward to the First Baptist preschoolers who were in my kindergarten class at William Fox Elementary School. First Baptist Church does an excellent job preparing the children for the kindergarten experience using a developmentally appropriate approach. The development of their fine motor skills, listening skills, sense of routine and how to follow directions launch them into kindergarten and they soar because of their preschool experience! I would highly recommend the First Baptist Preschool experience."
- Diane P. Harris, Kindergarten Teacher
