The Way of Transformation
“Everything must change...No one stays the same.”
Lent recalls times of wilderness and wandering, from newly freed Hebrew slaves in exile to Jesus' temptation in the desert. God has always called people out of their safe, walled cities into uncomfortable places, revealing paths they would never have chosen. Despite our culture of self-indulgence, we too are called to walk an alternative path-one of humility, justice, and peace. Walter Brueggemann's thought-provoking reflections for the season of Lent invite us to consider the challenging, beautiful life that comes with walking the way of grace.
A Way Other Than Our Own, by renowned Old Testament scholar, Walter Brueggemann, is the book for our church-wide Lenten small group study. Dr. Brueggemann's thought-provoking reflections for the season of Lent invite us to consider the challenging, beautiful life that comes with walking the way of grace. We invite you in this season to meet in small groups in members’ homes the weeks of March 6 through April 14.
Please see the Lenten Small Group Participation Guide for session outlines and daily Scripture readings.

Ash Wednesday Service, March 1, 6:15 - 7:15 p.m. in the Sanctuary
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent in the Christian Church. The name dies cinerum (day of ashes) likely dates from as early as the eighth century. The foreheads of the congregants are marked with ashes in the sign of a cross. This service begins a series of Wednesday services continuing through Holy Week called Journey to the Cross, a time of reflection and penitence, within the reality of grace found in Jesus Christ and His death on the cross. Please Note: Children in grades 3-5 should accompany their families to the Ash Wednesday service. All younger children, grades 2 and lower, have their regular music and mission groups.
Journey to the Cross, Wednesdays, March 8 - April 5, 6:15 - 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary
Pastor Jim Somerville will lead worship on the theme of The Way of Transformation: No One Stays the Same.
Palm Sunday, April 9, worship at 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary; televised live at 11 in central Virginia on TV8
We celebrate the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, one week before His resurrection. As Jesus entered the holy city, He neared the culmination of a long journey toward Golgotha. Palm Sunday marked the start of “Passion Week,” the final seven days of Jesus’ earthly ministry.
Praying Through the Stations of the Cross, April 10-14 from noon - 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel
The Journey of our faith as Christians is not only a journey through history, but also a journey of our own personal commitment to God. If we follow Jesus on His journey, we begin to understand that in Jesus’ sufferings we see our own journey mirrored in His. There are fourteen stations to the cross. We will examine the eight that are depicted as the main events in Jesus’ life as recorded in the Gospels. This hour will be a time of silent reflection and prayer. A member from our prayer team will be present to assist you. Please consider setting aside one hour during Holy Week to reflect on the cross, the power of love, the commitment of God to humanity, and the faithfulness and grace of God that knows no limits.
Maundy Thursday Service, April 13, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.,
Following dinner from 5:00 - 6:00 p.m. in Flamming Hall, a Communion and Tenebrae service takes place in the Sanctuary. We observe a special Communion service on Maundy Thursday in memory of Jesus’ Last Supper with His disciples. Jesus washed the disciples’ feet as an act of humility and service, thereby setting an example that we should love and serve one another in humility.
Wednesday night reservations & pricing apply for dinner. Please pay at the door.
Easter Sunday, April 16, worship at 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary; televised live at 11 in central Virginia on TV8
